Transgender Victoria has chosen to withdraw from our engagement in the upcoming Victoria Police Town Hall. This is in recognition of the fact that many trans and gender diverse people do not feel safe enough to contribute to constructive critique of police while they are present.
In a climate where our rights, safety and wellbeing remain precarious, we want policing to be better. While we acknowledge the police abolition movement, and the dire consequences of colonisation, TGD people still deserve to be safe whenever they access justice services - whether it is to call 000 or need to report crimes against their person or property.
In lieu of the Victoria Police Town Hall, there will be a small community-run consultation at Library at the Dock on Thursday 5th December at 11AM with the Commissioner of LGBTQIA+ Communities Joe Ball in attendance to listen to community needs. No representatives from Victoria Police will be in attendance. Community feedback will be anonymised and provided to the LGBTQIA+ Police Reference Group in January 2025.
We are committed to the wellbeing of attendees and organisers, and emphasise the need for respectful expression of all perspectives held by TGD people. A stand alone space with a debrief person will be available.
Community members can also have their say via the survey here.
