The Trans and gender diverse community is mourning the loss of one of its eminent members Dr Penny Whetton - a scientist, climate activist, artist, and warm human being. Penny led CSIRO’s national climate projections work from 1992 to 2014, producing the reports which predict how Australia’s climate is going to change due to global heating. She was a lead author of three IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports including the 4th assessment report which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Penny was also an activist for action on climate change and campaigned tirelessly for the Greens.
She was a role model and an inspiration for so many trans and gender diverse people and her passing is a great loss to all the communities in which she participated.
Our sincerest condolences to Penny's wife Senator Janet Rice and family.
