One week ago, Victoria Police announced their withdrawal from the 2025 Midsumma Pride March. While Transgender Victoria acknowledges this decision, we remain firm in our stance: we will not be marching.
The response from Victoria Police following their withdrawal was inadequate and failed to reassure our communities of their commitment to the systemic cultural change needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary (TGD) people.
TGV has conducted extensive community consultation and engaged in deep listening to understand the concerns of TGD people regarding policing. While we acknowledge that some individuals have positive experiences with law enforcement, this does not invalidate or minimise the ongoing, systemic issues faced by many within our communities. It is unacceptable that some trans people still do not feel safe enough to call 000 in times of need.
We are committed to working with Victoria Police over the next 12 months to advocate for meaningful reform and address the concerns raised by our communities. We hope to reach a point where all TGD people feel safe and included marching alongside law enforcement at Pride.
TGV recognises the diverse range of views within our communities and understands that some individuals may choose to march in the Midsumma Pride March. With increased trans visibility across many community groups, we are confident that individuals can find a group that aligns with their values and identity.
As an alternative for those seeking a trans-centric space to celebrate Pride, TGV is hosting a Trans Pride Picnic on 15th February. We invite all members of our communities to join us for a day of connection, celebration, and community.
