Meta's Policy Changes: A Green Light for Trans Hate?

Content warning: some transphobic material is quoted below.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, recently announced changes to its content moderation policies that have sent shockwaves through LGBTQIA+ communities. These changes, which loosen restrictions on hate speech targeting marginalised groups, raise serious concerns about the safety and well-being of TGD people online.

As Communications Lead for Transgender Victoria - an organisation that is run for, by and with TGD people - I have experienced firsthand the harmful impact of trolling and hate speech. Our social media pages are frequently targeted by those seeking to cause harm and spread misinformation about our identities. Meta's policy changes threaten to exacerbate this problem, creating an environment where transphobia and other forms of hate speech are allowed to flourish.

Of particular concern is Meta explicitly permitting "allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation." This revolting and dangerous rhetoric perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the progress made in recognising the validity, diversity and beauty of TGD identities.

Let me be clear: Trans people have always existed and will continue to exist, regardless of the hateful rhetoric directed at us. We are not a mental illness. We are not abnormal. We are simply people who deserve to live our lives free from discrimination and violence.

Meta's policy changes are a step backward in the fight for equality. They send a message that hate speech is acceptable, and that the safety and well-being of marginalised communities are not a priority.

I urge Meta to reconsider these harmful policy changes and prioritise the safety of all its users. I urge our community and allies to remain vigilant and report any instances of hate speech encountered on Meta's platforms. And most importantly, I urge you to join us in building a stronger, more resilient community.

In the meantime, Transgender Victoria will continue to provide vital support and advocacy for TGD communities.
